Enhance your skills in working with children and young people (CYP) through our comprehensive training series. These sessions provide essential knowledge and practical tools for counsellors and professionals. Delivered by experienced practitioners, the training offers valuable insights into risk management, ethical practice, and effective engagement with CYP, parents, and carers. Join us to deepen your expertise and confidently support the wellbeing of young people in your practice.
Curriculum
We are offering a year-long training programme with experienced child therapists and supervisors. The training will consist of 7 days, containing:
1. Training on BACP core competencies for working with CYP, including child development, family transitions, contracting, ethical guidelines, confidentiality, consent, and capacity.
2. Understanding youth culture, diversity, and neurodiversity. Communication with CYP, parents, and carers from different backgrounds and developmental levels.
3. Working with anger, anxiety, and depression in CYP. Overview of mental health trends, including school avoidance, social anxiety, and risky behaviours.
4. Safeguarding training (morning). Afternoon session on legal aspects of working with CYP, risk management in cases of self-harm, suicidal ideation, and substance misuse.
5. Systemic work with families, schools, social care, and other agencies. Exploring family systems, attachment styles, and intergenerational trauma.
6. Developmental trauma and abuse in CYP. Safe trauma work using the three-stage model and Polyvagal theory.
7. Humanistic approaches in CYP counselling, including emotional processing, creative methods, and play therapy.
Dates
All training takes place on a Saturday, in person at Somerset Counselling Centre, Apsley House, Taunton.
Training runs from 10am to 4pm.

Costs
There is one cost for the training, so it is cost efficient to attend all training days. If any dates are missed, materials will be provided however the context and conversations will not be recorded.
The cost is £525.
Deposit of £25 to be paid on Eventbrite to secure your place. Our office will then be in touch to discuss a payment plan for the balance to be settled before the event.
Award
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance, and each day can be recorded as a CPD day.
Logistics
Training runs in person from Somerset Counselling Centre, Apsley House, Taunton.
Training days are 10am-4pm
Refreshments provided. There are lots of local places for lunch such as Shoreditch White, Loafers and The Cosy Club.
