ABOUT SOMERSET COUNSELLING CENTRE

SCC provides a safe place to talk to a skilled counsellor, who will listen and help you understand how past experiences, worries about the future, or lack of self-confidence may be affecting your life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You may have a feeling of not living fully, be plagued by anxiety or stress, feeling stuck in repeating old patterns which no longer serve you.  You may have experienced trauma, relationship breakdown or bereavement and need clarity around how this may be impacting on your life right now. You may seek counselling as a result of a crisis or for personal development; alternatively you may be encouraged to seek counselling by family members, friends or colleagues.

Counselling can help if you are:

  • Suffering from anxiety attacks or depression
  • Feeling confused and unable to cope or lacking in confidence
  • Having difficulties within personal or family relationships
  • Experiencing any kind of loss, bereavement or trauma
  • Facing a problem which is hard to talk about or resolve
  • Experiencing stress or problems with your work

The counselling relationship is unique and in many respects unlike any other.  The focus of the counselling session is entirely upon you, the client. The counsellor will offer you a safe place to explore your feelings, anxieties and hopes and will work with you to develop your understanding, coping strategies and ways to manage difficult areas of your life.

Most people can benefit from counselling. Our counsellors work with individuals, couples and young people.  We work across different cultures, religion, sexuality and disability and are committed to working with difference and diversity.

Any personal information you give the counsellor is treated in the strictest confidence unless it reveals significant risk to yourself or to other people. In which case we may have to notify a relevant authority.  No information will be passed on to another agency without your permission, unless in exceptional circumstances, for example the requirement of court of law.  If you have any concerns at all about this, please discuss them at the initial interview.

The counsellor will work with you to decide what is most appropriate.  The number of counselling sessions depends on you as an individual and your unique presenting issues.  You can discuss with the counsellor how long you might expect to come in the light of the issues you need help with. Counselling sessions are held weekly and we have a cancellation period of 4 weeks. ( We do not offer home visits here at SCC )

Typically a counselling session is 50 minutes.
